Notes

Note 1: On 5 September, 2003 the CSX CQ (now BD) desk's territory was extended northward across the former Landover sub track to M Street and mileposts were renumbered from RO to Riverdale on the Alexandria Extension to conform to the RF&P milepost system. CSX AU (now BC) desk controls the Alexandria Extension from Riverdale through Anacostia Jct to M Street (exclusive of the interlocking) as well as the Landover subdivision.

Note 2: During July, 2006 a major track re-alignment was completed at Anacostia Junction. Historically, this was the point at which the B&O Alexandria Extension joined the Pennsylvania Railroad double-track mainline. After the change, “the Branch” is now the main double track from Chesapeake Junction all the way to M Street. The former Pennsy Landover sub now diverges off track #3 and up a ladder to each of its four tracks. The CPL (color position light) signals were replaced with traffic-light style signals on new gantry supports. The old Alexandria Extension single track is now a storage siding with a hand-throw switch on the east end and power interlocking on the west end as part of Anacostia Jct.

Note 3: PA signal formerly controlled eastbound movement on track #2 but was removed from service in 2007. It was replaced by a hand-throw switch into the aggregate plant at Annapolis Junction. This was also the long-gone junction of the line to Annapolis and connection to the Pennsylvania RR line, now the Amtrak Northeast Corridor.

Note 4: The dilapidated Anacostia River bridge suffered major metal fatigue and failure in November 2006, rendering track #3 unusable. All trains crossed the bridge using track #2 until it was repaired in September 2010. Now repairs on track #2 have that main out of service; CSX expects to have track #2 repaired by the end of January 2011. Stay tuned.

Note 5: 2015.03.22 — CSX has plans to make the Alexandria Extension completely double track. Al Moran reports that as of 22 March, 2015 the current extent of double track runs from JD wye westward (compass south) to a new west end control point at Tuxedo, Maryland. They stopped here because the trestle over busy U.S. Route 50 is single track and replacing that involves getting Maryland Department of Transportation involved to stop traffic (presumably overnight) and all the studies and permits required for that whole mess. A new defect detector has been installed at Tuxedo to replace those at Tanglewood. Tanglewood Drive now bisects universal crossovers that represent the last chance for northbound trains to go east or west on the Capital subdivision. A replacement double track trestle over the Northeast Branch of the Anacostia River carries each track around its corresponding leg of the wye to go either east or west on the Capital subdivision.

Note 6: CSX extended the double track from Jessup Yard auto ramp to Salvage interlocking to allow rack trains to switch without fouling the mainline. This work was completed in 2014.
